Which are the best 2021 albums and movies?

You judge a year in a lot of ways: Who was famous? Who was hot? Who was on their way up? And what was going on with that unending pandemic? Yes! All these questions are the standard ones you ask about any year; however, these questions won’t give us the true nature of that year–the warp and the weave of the every day, the “stuff” of life that gave the days their unique illumination. No, the soul of a year isn’t in these places. The true soul of a year in the art. (Let that sink in. Hey, wait, reader, wait a little longer to let that sink in. Too long, move on, weirdo.)

The lifeblood of any year is found in the books, theater, short non-fiction…no, I’m kidding. What is this Best of 1821? It’s in the music; it’s on the silver screen.

So, to talk about the true soul of 2021, we have gathered our good friends, The Unnatural 20’s, as we attempt to whittle down our brackets of the best sixteen albums (movies for your ears) and movies (albums upon the screen) to a more manageable eight per show.

It’s hard and here’s why. There are so many good albums and movies that we have to just casually throw to the side. People worked on these things and we’re just like, “the cymbals were too splashy on the intro track,” and then we seriously never mention it again. Part of what is tough about being a critic is it causes you to become a little critical if I’m honest.
