Dead Sara
Dead Sara is a 4-piece rock band from LA which I would describe as: If Melissa Etheridge was younger, more energetic and raspier and had a more aggressive Silversun Pickups for a band. All of that is to say that lead singer Emily Armstrong is exciting to watch & listen to and her band is kickass. The best part of the band IMO is guitarist Siouxsie Medley, who plays some badass guitar and provides a counterbalance to Armstrong’s big energy. Medley is also quite easy on the eyes, but it is her onstage stoicism that gives Dead Sara a more nuanced vibe than just a rock band with a girl singer.
These two ladies have sex appeal, talent, and some good songs. Their clear single is called Weatherman and Armstrong’s vocals reign supreme on this one. With almost Rage Against The Machine-like aggression, the song makes you want head-bang and scream along when the perfectly delivered screams come in on the chorus. The quasi-talking section evokes a bit of Jim Morrison too. The video has some great shots, check it out:
For those of you impressed by stylistic range, there are examples on the internet of a more subdued acoustic vibe too. They recently did a radio performance wherein they played a couple acoustic songs including a cover of Nirvana’s Sliver.
Their debut full-length album comes out on April 10 and is expected to be pretty darn good. You should be hearing a bit more of them this year, as they will be playing several shows at SXSW in Austin next week, touring in support of Chevelle this spring, and playing on the Warped Tour this summer. In the meantime, they have a 3 song EP you can buy on iTunes. If you like your music free, check out their FB page for a couple free downloads.
