FALL TV EXTRAVAGANZA!!!

HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN

** (out of ****)

The Odd Couple by any other name is still The Odd Couple, regardless of the gimmick it uses to get said Odd Couple together. In this case, we have David Hornsby, a former It’s Always Sunny writer (and Rickety Cricket!), as the nerdy, foppish, gentlemanly Alan, and Kevin Dillon as Bert, who is like Johnny Drama if he wasn’t an actor. Bert is a big, dumb, masculine gym owner, and therefore the exact opposite of Alan. See where I’m going with this? They see each other at Bert’s gym for the first time since high school, and begin an unlikely relationship, as Bert helps Alan turn the column he writes for a magazine, also called “How to Be a Gentleman”, from stuffy and unnecessary to sexy and manly. The rest of the talented cast, including Dave Foley’s fat father, Mary Jane Rice Cup, and Murray from Flight of the Conchords, all pitch in and help this nerd become less of a gentleman. That’s it. There’s no ending where the main character realizes he should actually just be himself. They all think he sucks, and he agrees. Sure, every once in awhile, he will let them know that they also suck. But they’re not going to change. They’re not gentlemen, and he is. Oh, and it’s not funny.

TOMORROW: JESSE!!!
