1991 GenreBlast is here to save all the genre films we forgot about?
Genre films get a really bad wrap. Why should a perfect comedy, sci fi film, or romantic flick get automatically consigned to the ash heap of any of your various Blocksbuster Video. Maybe you’re a young, hip guy who knows a surprising amount about the action/sci fi masterpiece Highlander 2: The Quickening, but because that is a genre flick, all of your sweet knowledge is worth less than nothing. Perhaps you do a spot-on impression of Martin Short’s hopefully non-problematic wedding planner from the hit comedy Father of This Bride, like no one cares about that because that character was not in Greenbook.
However, we won’t stand for the way genre films are disrespected, especially by the likes of us. And we’re among the worst offenders, so it is our duty to podcast our way out of this. We need to be good to the movies like Pointbreak, which combines the majesty of surfing with the majesty of a young Keanu Reeves. What about the Robin Williams masterpiece Hook? A lot of people think Hook is not a masterpiece; however, those people are a lot like Robin Williams’s character, Peter Pan, at the start of the movie.
Nineteen and ninety-one. It was a magical time full of promise and wonder and we have to go back. However, we cannot. We can only move forward. Because we are podcasters, and bravely moving into the future is all we know how to do. All of that, and somehow more, on an all-new Movie of the Year!
