Music Worth Buying + Music Worth A Free Download Vol. V

FREE MUSIC ON AMAZON

I recently spent the better part of an afternoon perusing Amazon’s free mp3’s and I had a blast downloading a ton of free songs.  You can go here to do the same thing for yourself, but you don’t need to that just yet.  Take a look at my recommendations first!

Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues

I heard this song on the radio a few months ago and really enjoyed it, much moreso than previous Fleet Foxes.  They weren’t bad before, but this song has so much more than I had previously seen. I’m gonna revisit their back catalog to see what kind of fan I wanna be.  They use their mellow but interesting formula with big swells and interesting lyrics. Download it.

Blind Pilot – Keep You Right
Blind Pilot – We Are The Tide

If you read my review of the Dave Matthews Band Caravan, then you may remember I saw these guys by accident on a side stage and I liked them.  So I was pleased to see that they’ve got some free stuff out there. Both of these songs start unassumingly and build up to some fun, happy musical moments.  The video is for their song Go On Say It which I saw them play at the Gorge…and it was stuck in my head so badly I was humming it last week and didn’t know who it was. Needless to say I’ve played it 20+ times today.

Little Dragon – Ritual Union

Little Dragon knows how to do groovy electronic, and whoever thought to put this fan video together deserves some serious kudos.  If you know Little Dragon, it is probably from some of their collaborations with Gorillaz.  They are Swedish, and have been together for 15 years.  If they’re gonna blow up, this new album’s the time.

Nick 13 – Carry My Body Down

This one definitely has country music going on, but the voice doesn’t have the twang…so I kinda like it.  This guy was the guitar player from Tiger Army (a psychobilly band Ive never heard of) and he sounds like a less croon-ey version of Chris Isaac. It kinda reminds me of the solo record that Dustin Kensrue (of Thrice) did. That is a huge compliment, and I will have to listen to more Nick 13 to see if the comparison is apt.

Liam Finn & Eliza Jane – Honest Face

The son of Crowded House’s Neil Finn, Liam has a pretty cool sound for an Australian. The video give you a little peek into what he and Eliza do.  I like this free track cuz its like weird electronic indie rock with the whole guy and girl duet thing.  It’s a fun song.

Astronautalis – Dmitri Mendeleev

This guy picked a pretty sweet name and his track is pretty good.  If you want to be impressed, however, check out his freestyles. He takes topic suggestions from the audience and hits those topics in some clever ways.  Apparently he’s been around since 2006 (2003 if you count a self-release) and calls his music “historical fiction hip-hop.” I guess if the Nerdcore genre had an overly academic older brother, Astronautalis would be that brother.

Gardens & Villa – Black Hills

This group is so small I couldn’t even search them on Wikipedia. I’m not in love with ALL of their music, but this song and some others are enjoyable.  What I really like about them are the super trippy videos.  I love those.

Joss Stone – Somehow

Not my favorite song, but she has one helluva voice…and SOOO hot.

JJ Grey & Mofro –  Orange Blossoms

Sounding like an unknown collaboration between CCR and vintage Eric Clapton, JJ Grey & Mofro have a sweet retro sound. Sadly, along with the retro-ness comes a lack of compelling YouTube videos.  You should still download this song.  Also, my dad says you should see them live.  He thinks they are awesome.

SO there you have it.  A bunch of FREE songs that I test drove for you.  There’s a ton more at Amazon‘s site…so if you need to procrastinate or something, that is a good place to go. Another good place to go is our YourPopFilter.com FB page cuz we post music videos there when we’re bored.

Last but not least, if you enjoy the music these artists make, then please consider buying a song or album from them.  If we don’t support GOOD music it might vanish…or get pushed to the wayside.
