NEW FALL TV EXTRAVAGANZA!!!
UP ALL NIGHT
Sometimes scripts come off in a way I call “Funny 101”. Basically what this means is that they feel like the writers recently took a comedy class in order to learn how comedy today works, instead of being funny on their own. Typically, what this results in is dialogue and scenarios that feel like they should be funny. They are in the shape of funny. They remind you of other things that are funny. But they are somehow not funny. Unfortunately, that’s how Up All Night starts off. It stars Christina Applegate and Will Arnet as brand new parents, who have decided that she will continue her career as a right hand man to a daytime talk show host, and he will leave his law firm and be a stay-at-home dad. You want to laugh right away, either because it looks and feels like shows you like, or because you like Christina Applegate and Will Arnett. But then something weird happens, about halfway through the episode. It’s hard to describe, but all of a sudden you start to smile. It can’t be that the writers figured it out halfway through the episode. That doesn’t make sense. It can’t be Maya Rudolph, who is normally awesome, but news came out a couple of months ago that when Bridesmaids hit, they went back and tripled her screen time. It’s obvious, as she is now forced into every single scene. I think it has to be Applegate and Arnett, actors that I would never think to put together, but are on the verge of killing it, chemistry-wise. We’re very far away from Kelly Bundy and GOB. Instead, we are getting two realistic, frazzled, married people who aren’t necessarily going to be the best of parents, and know it. I’m going to give this show my patented four episode time limit, and it wouldn’t surprise me if I immediately drop it. But it also wouldn’t surprise me if this is the one new show I choose to put into my routine. Well, maybe a little surprised. – RH
