2020 is the worst thing to ever happen, but there is still a little magic left in the world. You know how I know? Because this holiday season has given birth to a holiday miracle: a free Patreon episode of the show, delivered unto the people. You’re welcome. No, YOU’RE welcome! And perhaps the best movie to do this with is A.I., a movie that came close to being in the bracket, but didn’t quite make it. Ryan maintains that A.I. might have taken the whole thing down if it weren’t for the fact that the “two stooges” who “ruin everything” managed to “ruin yet another thing important to me, when I have so little.” Yowza, I’m not sure how to unpack that.
A movie for people who love allegory
If you get past the part where this movie is a fairy tale, it is a sophisticated and complex movie which takes an unvarnished look at the quiet agony of existential dread. What is our purpose, and does it matter? Perhaps we should simply pick any goal because they are all equally empty but they give us something to fill up the vast stretches of our desolate lives. Teddy, a robot bear, helps the movie to ask these questions. Teddy, I love you.
What we cover
We hit all the important points in this one. At one point Ryan says, “Teddy is my fashion icon” which I thought was very upsetting, and if episodes of podcasts had posters, I think we would put that on the poster. We spend quite a bit of time talking about ourselves in this one. We had to coax it out of ourselves, but once we got going, we open up about a lot of real stuff.
